Microsoft faces investigation in the UK for price hikes related to Copilot

According to CoinMeta, the UK Competition and Markets Authority has launched an investigation into Microsoft to determine whether the company misled users into paying higher software subscription fees by integrating artificial intelligence features into its Office 365 product. The focus of the investigation is on whether Microsoft clearly informed users about changes to the subscription plans and price increases due to new features such as those related to AI before renewing their subscriptions to Office 365, which includes software like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It is reported that Microsoft offered certain AI features to existing users for free last year, but when subscriptions were renewed, users were automatically switched to more expensive new packages. Unless users actively chose other options or canceled their subscriptions, they were forced to pay higher fees. As of now, the authority has not concluded that Microsoft has violated any laws. If a violation of consumer protection regulations is established, Microsoft could face a fine equivalent to up to 10% of its global revenue.
